OYU Coaching Requirements
All OYU coaches involved with teams in either the state league or YCCs much meet USAU’s coaching criteria. On this page, you’ll find an overview of all the steps you need to
USAU has updated their coaching certification process for this season, and so it will be slightly different than it has been in past years. Below is an overview of what each team’s coach needs to do in order to participate in the Oregon High School Ultimate State League and State Championships.
The two primary steps are to pass the USAU Foundational Coaching Test (and meet all its prerequisites) and then attend an official USAU Virtual Coaching Clinic. The full process is outlined at this link, and also below.
Step 1: Get a USAU Membership
Whether you’re renewing an old membership or getting a new one, in order to be a coach, you need to have some form of USAU membership. They used to offer coaching memberships and chaperone memberships, but no longer. Now you can get a player membership or a non-player membership and use those as the basis for your coaching certification.

Step 2: Get a Background Check
You will need to get an official background check through your USAU membership portal. This costs $30 and takes up to 5 business days to complete. If you’ve already gotten a background check and are wondering whether or not it’s still current, you can check your status in your USAU membership portal.

Step 4: Take the CDC Concussion Training
You will need to complete the CDC’s Heads Up Concussion Training and then upload your certificate into your USAU account at this link. If you’ve already taken the training and want to make sure you’re still up to date, you can check your status at that same link.

Step 5: Take the Foundational Coaching Test
Once you have completed the above items, you can register for the Foundational Coaching test. It costs $20 and once you’ve paid, you’ll be sent a test (on the 4 videos and supplementary documents) via email within 5 days. You will have 24 hours to complete the test once you start and will be able to “look up” the answers as you take it (which comes in handy especially for a lot of the questions about rules). You have 2 chances to score at least 70% to pass the test.
Step 6: Attend a USAU Virtual Coaching Clinic
In order to participate in our USAU-sanctioned state championship tourney, all teams will also need to have at least one coach take one of the USAU’s Virtual High School Coaching Clinics, which are offered once per month. In order to qualify to take a virtual clinic, you must have completed your Foundational Coaching Test (and all prerequisites) outlined above.
You need to complete your clinic prior to the State Championship tourney on May 20-21. Here are the dates and registration links for each monthly clinic, which costs $45 and are conducted virtually.
